First Year Students: CDTA is Laser Focused on Your Success
Law school begins with a great deal of trepidation for many first year students, and although anxiety levels may run high, this type of intensity often leads to an intense motivation to succeed. Prior to law school orientation, you will likely be bombarded by well-meaning friends and family members regaling their horror stories of their own cutthroat law school experience. They will direct you to watch films such as The Paper Chase or One L , depicting first-year law students going to any length to push their fellow classmates “down the curve”. You will hear about professors hell-bent on seeing you fail or finding satisfaction in your struggles with the Socratic Method. But do not fear if you have wisely selected the California Desert Trial Academy, College of Law!
At CDTA, our mission is to provide a comprehensive legal education that prepares you to become an extraordinary legal advocate. The culture of our law school is vastly different from that described above. Our goal is to keep you in law school, not have you fail, and we provide every type of support we can to accomplish this goal. Our graduates will be the first to tell you that the atmosphere is positive, encouraging and empowering. You will form tight bonds with your fellow classmates, upperclassmen, alumni, faculty and administration. If you are struggling in a particular area, we will work with you to get you through it. Those who have gone before you will share their tips, their approaches and even their outlines. We become family here at CDTA.
Most of our students form small study groups to work together outside of class. We find that by helping each other, you strengthen your own knowledge. You can even use the distance learning tool, Zoom, to work with students outside of the area.
In addition to peer support, the local legal community are strong supporters of CDTA. Your professors are Judges, Lawyers, Mediators and others at the top of their game professionally. You will have an opportunity to get to know these professionals well and they can be invaluable resources for internships and jobs. Finding a mentor who works in your legal field of interest is a phenomenal way to jumpstart your career during and after law school.
The key to success at California Desert Trial Academy College of Law is in doing your absolute personal best and asking for help when you need it. If you feel like you are beginning to drown in classwork and will have trouble catching up, speak to the CDTA student resources office.
