CDTA Students Support One Another
“We’re all in this together, so let’s help each other achieve common goals.” This a strong tenet of the California Desert Trial Academy (CDTA). The more resources, human or otherwise, that a student has in learning about any subject, the more a student will learn. It really is nothing but basic common sense. The CDTA emphasizes student collaboration and teamwork as an important component of achieving academic and professional goals.
It seems every law school student knows the story of a certain fellow student who “misplaced” and unscrupulously concealed books in the law library to prevent his classmates from completing a legal research assignment. Fortunately, these types of instances are rare, but they nevertheless exemplify the competitiveness of law school.
There will always be individuals whose obsession to succeed and surpass their fellow students will prevent any engagement within a team environment that acts to achieve success collectively for the “needs of the many” (said Spock?). These are individual persons who fail to realize the notion that “we’re all in this together; let’s help each other achieve our common goals.” These are individuals who may have never realized the benefits of working with, and as, a team.
At the California Desert Trial Academy, we have created an environment of partnership and teamwork to educate, train, and develop our students. We encourage and foster student collaboration and cooperation rather than competition. After all, attorneys serve the public for the greater good. The practice of law is not a sport, nor is it a competition.
We believe that this level and type of support is invaluable to the success of students. Soon after they enroll, CDTA students discover that together they may accomplish what is impossible individually. As a result, students persistently and patiently help each other achieve common goals.
CDTA students, faculty, staff and (especially) alumni form a family-like bond that fosters support, perseverance, and guidance not just in the present, but in the future. CDTA’s growing family of student and alumni attorneys freely and openly share their legal experiences, career advice, and academic tips. Our past students clearly empathize with present students and offer invaluable advice on achieving life’s delicate balance while working, raising a family, and studying to be an exceptional legal advocate.
