Using Zoom To Enhance Your Law School Experience

At the California Desert Trial Academy, we are continuously seeking ways to better utilize online resources for the benefit of CDTA’s growing student body. This includes better ways for students and faculty to communicate. Zoom provides a reliable, feature-laden video communications experience for students and professors alike. Its’ value is obvious and importance cannot be overstated during the coronavirus pandemic. For many law students, Zoom will now do more than enhance their law school experience – Zoom will provide their law school experience.

As of the beginning of spring, 2020, law students were trying to adjust to the dramatic alteration of their law school experience as they were pondering how to adjust to the idea of course lectures in internet-based classrooms. This cutting-edge technology platform is designed to support education and collaboration while allowing users to stay connected and informed. Zoom even allows a professor to monitor a student’s presence, including whether they’ve left class for a different web page or browser.

To stream classes online using Zoom, only the following is required:

  • a computer that is no more than 5 years old
  • during class, a headset or speakers are required for audio use
  • Zoom software – Students only need to download the “Zoom Client for Meetings”

Zoom allows professors to see their students in real-time, thus allowing them to deliver more engaging class lectures and obtain more meaningful student interactions. This results in effectively delivering legal education to students remotely. Students learn by their participation in Zoom-driven open forums, raising questions, discussing issues, and using critical thinking to engage in legal problem-solving.

The following may be helpful advice as classes transition to an online-only format:

  • Determine the extent to which a professor will use Zoom. Classes, meetings, student conferences?
  • To use Zoom effectively, familiarize yourself with the application. Learn how to use the video, audio, and chat settings before logging in and participating for the first time.
  • Always be helpful, polite, and professional when interacting through Zoom.
