Higher Education: How to Enjoy the Law School Journey

Law school can be an intimidating endeavor for most new students, at first. It is also a great privilege, and will be one of the most challenging, fulfilling, and exciting times of your life. Meant to prepare you for taking the state bar and then enjoying a career in the law afterward, law school is a rigorous workout for the mind. Your intellectuality, stamina, and patience will be tested for four years. For many students, though, wonderful memories are made during this time.

The one thing you will hear over and over is that you should prepare. If you begin doing so before you even get there—and stay ahead—you will have a much easier time. This is one of the great benefits to online law school too. If you are attending California Desert Trial Academy College of Law, you will not have to worry about getting housing settled ahead of time. That is a tremendous weight off the shoulders of most students as finding a place to live can be exceedingly difficult and expensive. Although it is important to attend Saturday workshops at CDTA, and other campus events, you also will not have to worry about that every day commute. This is another huge weight off for most students too.

It is key to be fresh, motivated, and ready to tackle four years of challenge—from day one—and you must try to stay that was as much as possible. Be prepared for an intense amount of reading; in fact, if there is anything you can get ahead on before entering law school, do so. You may just want to get into the habit of reading each day and preparing yourself mentally. If there are loose ends of any kind, begin tying them up. If you have been in a difficult dating relationship prior to law school, consider whether that is something you want to continue. Remember, you need to have as little outside stress on you as possible, and it is critical to surround yourself only with family and friends who support your vision for the future.

Are you a good studier, historically? If not, prepare to be! You may even be able to engage in some law school groups that start getting together over the summer. Start sharpening your skills for outlining and reviewing, briefing, note-taking, and more. If possible, speak to older students about how they got through law school, and what propelled them on to success (assuming they did well).

Are you interested in becoming a skilled lawyer and negotiator? Our mission at CDTA College of Law is to educate, train, and develop extraordinary legal advocates.
