Setting Up the Most Effective Work Area for Distance Learning

distance learning

No matter where you attend law school, get ready to spend a great deal of time after class situated comfortably at your desk–and even if you are engaged in online, distance learning at a progressive law school like California Desert Trial Academy College of Law—with the freedom to study wherever you like—you will still need an organized area with everything at your fingertips for streamlined studying.

There is no way around the fact that you will be poring over substantial amounts of reading material most days and nights, probably studying as many hours per week as you would devote to a full-time job—not to mention going to class. While certainly there will be many times where you just want to get comfortable in your pajamas and spread out your study materials on the couch or even a bed, you will need a nicely appointed desk area with a desk lamp (think of it as your office), and sufficient room to hold your desktop or laptop computer, paper, and writing utensils, related coursework and books, and anything else related to law school.

A comfortable chair is highly recommended, along with a clean, cheerful, attractive space. Make sure you set a good temperature for your environment, and that you can stay up late studying as needed—without disturbing a partner or roommates. The area should be as free from distractions as possible too, as tempted as you may be to have a television or social media streaming in the background. Working from home has distractions that cannot be avoided, but if you can tuck yourself away into a quiet office area, study hours will fly by much easier.

Consider ergonomics (and maybe even a little feng shui!), along with promoting a way to stay tidy. If your desk and work area turn into a chaotic mess, not only might you feel reluctant to hang out there, but this general attitude could carry over into studying also, leading to procrastination and a downward spiral that should be avoided at all cost. Create a solid foundation to work from, along with a positive demeanor; after all, the rewards at the end of the road have the potential to be incredibly fulfilling, spanning a lifetime career as a trial attorney.
