Why Internships Are So Important for Law Students
Law students and internships tend to go hand in hand, and years later there will still always be the question among peers and colleagues asking where you completed yours, or you might find yourself with your own firm offering a similar position to young go-getters. Interning is not just specific or important to law students exclusively, either. An internship of any sort offers students an introduction to what can be a very competitive work force for many potential careers; in many cases, they may be interning in large firms or corporations and have access to mentoring from key players. Interns are usually given special projects to complete during what may be a short amount of time while they are out of school for vacations or the summer.
Classroom experience is further solidified during the internship through actual work experience, along with exposure to a variety of different people in the workplace and clients—some of whom may not always be easy to deal with! And while law school may be tough, and the schedule demanding, working in a law firm during an internship can be doubly so—offering a taste of the discipline that will be required later, along with teaching new skills that interns can share on their resumes.
The intern experience also allows for great networking opportunities with other peers, as well as anyone else they meet during their time working in a firm. For some, the internship may even serve as an extended job interview that turns into a permanent job later. Because of this, it is important to take time in choosing the most suitable internship. If you are a law student currently considering an internship, make a careful selection based on your current knowledge, skills, interests, and career aspirations. Although you may only be working as an intern during a school break, the experience can be one of intense growth that not only sets you up for another successful semester of law school but gives you an excellent foundation for entering the workforce later—and hopefully with some good references earned too.
